An essential part of the business development process in industry is to assess both benefits and risks of any new technology or product.This applies to nanoscale processes as much as any other technology. |
The European chemical industry recognises that the development and application of nanotechnology may raise new safety, societal, and regulatory questions and challenges.
Although we believe that the existing risk assessment methods in principle provide a suitable framework for the assessment of nanomaterials we recognise that new approaches and methods may need to be developed to assess and control the potential risks of such newly emerging technologies.
For that reason the chemical industry is participating in national and international projects such as Nanocare and NanoSafe2 and drives industry-supported research projects with the aim of identifying potential effects on humans and on the environment.
