Colours are symbols for our standard of living and the expression of our culture and lifestyle. The basis of coloured articles, surfaces and food are colourants of synthetic and natural origin.
Technical literature distinguishes between pigments and dyes. According to the chemical nature of the products, one differentiates between inorganic pigments or organic pigments and organic dyes. Inorganic fillers perform essential technical functions in coatings, plastics, rubber and cosmetics, whilst also contributing to surface and colour effects.
Important fields of application for pigments are paints, printing inks and plastics, whereas dyes are principally used for the coloration of textiles and plastics.
